The Right Wheelchair Makes All The Difference

Choosing the right wheelchair is one of the most important decisions you can make for your everyday independence. The wrong chair - too heavy, too wide, or without the right support, can make daily life harder rather than easier. The right one opens everything back up.

Transit wheelchairs are ideal for users who need a carer to assist with pushing, offering a lightweight, compact design that folds easily for car boot transport. Self-propelled wheelchairs give the user greater independence, with larger rear wheels designed for easier self-navigation indoors and out.

As one of the UK's biggest mobility retailer with a 4.8-star Trustpilot rating, we offer free home demonstrations, expert in-store advice, and a range of finance options including the Motability Scheme. Not sure which wheelchair is right for you? Speak to one of our team today.

Finding the Right Wheelchair for Everyday Life

A wheelchair isn't just a mobility aid - it's the difference between staying at home and getting out. Between watching from the sidelines and being part of the moment. The right wheelchair gives you or your loved one the freedom to attend appointments, visit family, go shopping, and enjoy life on your own terms.

Our range of manual and transit wheelchairs is chosen with that in mind. Lightweight enough to lift into a car. Comfortable enough for longer outings. Durable enough to depend on every day. And practical enough for both the user and the person helping them.

What to consider

What's the Difference Between a Transit & Self-Propelled Wheelchair

If you're new to wheelchairs, the choice between transit and self-propelled can feel confusing. Here's a straightforward guide to help you choose with confidence.

Transit Wheelchairs

A transit wheelchair, sometimes called a transport wheelchair or attendant-propelled wheelchair, is designed to be pushed by a carer, family member, or attendant. The rear wheels are smaller than those on a self-propelled model, which makes the chair lighter, narrower, and easier to fold and store.

Transit wheelchairs are the right choice when:

  • A carer or family member will always be on hand to push
  • Portability and lightweight design are the priority
  • The chair needs to fold into a car boot regularly
  • The user has limited upper body strength or is unable to self-propel
  • The wheelchair is for occasional use - days out, appointments, travel

They're particularly popular for trips out, holidays, and situations where convenience and ease of transport matter most.

Self-Propelled Wheelchairs

A self-propelled wheelchair has larger rear wheels fitted with push rims, allowing the user to move themselves independently without needing a carer to push. They offer greater freedom and autonomy for users who have sufficient upper body strength to propel themselves.

Self-propelled wheelchairs are the right choice when:

  • The user wants to move independently some or all of the time
  • The wheelchair will be used regularly throughout the day
  • Upper body strength and mobility allow for self-propulsion
  • Greater independence at home, outdoors, or in public spaces is a priority

Many self-propelled wheelchairs also include attendant push handles, so a carer can still help when needed - giving you the best of both worlds.

Not Sure Which Wheelchair to Choose?

Transit or self-propelled? Lightweight or heavy duty? Folding or fixed? The right answer depends on how and where the wheelchair will be used - and who will be using it.

As a general guide: if a carer will always be doing the pushing, a transit wheelchair is likely the better fit - lighter, more compact, and easier to store. If the user wants to move independently some or all of the time, a self-propelled wheelchair with larger rear wheels gives them that freedom.

Our team offers free, no-pressure advice in store or at home — so you can try before you buy and make the right choice with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know

A transit wheelchair is designed to be pushed by a carer or attendant, with smaller rear wheels that make it lighter and more compact. A self-propelled wheelchair has larger rear wheels with push rims, allowing the user to move independently. The right choice depends on whether the user will be propelling themselves or relying on someone else to push, and how much portability matters for everyday use.

No. Transit wheelchairs have smaller rear wheels without push rims, so they cannot be self-propelled by the user. If independence of movement is important, a self-propelled wheelchair is the better option. Many self-propelled models also include attendant push handles, so a carer can still assist when needed.

Seat width is one of the most important measurements when choosing a wheelchair. As a general guide, there should be no more than 2.5cm of space on either side between the user's hips and the armrests, enough for comfort but not so much that the user lacks lateral support. Too narrow and the chair will be uncomfortable; too wide and it becomes harder to self-propel and navigate tight spaces.

Weight varies considerably by model. Lightweight transit wheelchairs typically weigh between 8kg and 12kg, making them manageable for most carers to lift into a car boot. Heavier-duty models can weigh more. If portability is a priority, always check the stated weight before purchasing.

Wheelchairs purchased for personal use by a person with a disability or long-term health condition are typically zero-rated for VAT in the UK, meaning you won't pay the standard 20% VAT. This can represent a significant saving on the purchase price. Our team can help you confirm eligibility at the point of enquiry or purchase.

When purchasing online, there is a VAT Form with more information and a list of eligible conditions on product pages and before purchase. You may have a condition that still qualifies that isn't on the list, you can tell us your qualifying condition by choosing 'other'.

Most lightweight folding transit wheelchairs are designed to fit into a standard car boot when folded. However, boot sizes vary between vehicles, so it's always worth checking the folded dimensions of a wheelchair against your car boot before purchasing. Our team can advise on which models are most suitable for your vehicle if needed.

Most manual and transit wheelchairs are suitable for everyday outdoor use on pavements, shopping centres, and similar surfaces. For more demanding outdoor terrain, look for models with larger wheels and a more robust frame. If you need a wheelchair for regular outdoor use on uneven surfaces, speak to our team for a personalised recommendation.
