An enclosed mobility scooter gives you the independence of a road scooter with protection from wind and rain, so poor weather no longer has to decide when you leave the house. As the evenings draw in and winter approaches, more people start looking at cabin scooters and canopy models to stay active all year round. This guide explains how cabin cars and canopy scooters differ and what to think about before you buy.

An enclosed mobility scooter is a road-legal scooter with a body or cover that shields the rider from the elements. Fully enclosed versions, often called cabin cars or cabin mobility scooters, have a solid shell with doors and a windscreen, much like a small car. Partially enclosed models use a canopy fitted over a road scooter, giving protection from above and in front whilst keeping the familiar open layout.
Both types are designed for people who want to travel further and more often without being put off by a forecast of drizzle. They're often grouped together as all-weather scooters, and you can compare the options in our range of all-weather mobility scooters.
A cabin car is the most protected way to travel by mobility scooter. You sit inside a sealed cabin with a door that closes, so wind and rain stay outside and warmth stays in. Many cabin scooters also include car-style features such as wipers and a heater, which makes longer journeys far more comfortable in the colder months.

The Eden Cabin Car is a fully enclosed Class 3 mobility scooter, hand-built in Great Britain. Heating, windscreen wipers, remote central locking, and a reversing camera all come as standard, so it feels much closer to driving a small car than riding a scooter.
You can choose from four standard colours (Glacier White, Night Blue, Cherry Red, or Stone Grey) or go fully bespoke with any colour or wrap you like, even your football team's colours. Optional upgrades include heated seats and longer-range batteries, and if you'd like something that isn't listed, just ask. Use our Cabin Car builder to design your own online.
A cabin car is a strong choice if you rely on your scooter for regular trips to the shops or to visit family and don't want the weather to dictate your plans. The enclosed cabin also gives a greater sense of security on the road, and central locking means you can leave it parked with peace of mind.
A canopy scooter is a road scooter fitted with a weatherproof hood, usually a frame with a clear screen at the front. It protects you from rain and wind from above and in front, whilst the sides stay more open than a cabin. Many riders like that they can still get on and off easily and enjoy the fresh air on milder days.
A canopy is generally a lower-cost way to add weather protection. The Royale 4 8mph mobility scooter with canopy is a good example, pairing built-in cover with a luxury seating system for longer outings.

Most cabin cars and canopy scooters are Class 3 mobility scooters, so they can be driven on the road at up to 8mph and on pavements at up to 4mph. Class 3 scooters must be registered with the DVLA, although the dealer will usually do this for you when you buy new, and there's no vehicle tax to pay. You don't need a driving licence, but for road use the scooter must have lights, indicators that work as hazard lights, a rear-view mirror, and a horn.
Class 3 scooters can't be driven on motorways or in bus lanes, and you should avoid dual carriageways with a speed limit over 50mph. If you do use one, you must have an amber flashing light fitted. For a fuller breakdown, read our guide on where you can drive your mobility scooter.
Enclosed scooters are larger than most road scooters, so you'll need a garage or secure outdoor space, ideally close to a power socket for overnight charging.
Think about your longest regular journey and allow some extra. Cold weather can reduce battery performance, so a longer-range battery is worth considering if you plan to travel further in winter.
A cabin door gives you a sheltered entry, but it does involve stepping in and lowering yourself into the seat. If transferring is difficult for you, try both types in person, as the more open layout of a canopy scooter can be easier to manage.
Accessories can make winter outings more comfortable, even with a canopy. A weatherproof scooter cover helps protect your scooter when it's stored outside, and our winter mobility scooter tips share more ways to stay safe and warm.

You don't need a driving licence for a Class 3 mobility scooter, but it must be registered with the DVLA before you use it on the road.
Insurance isn't a legal requirement for Class 3 mobility scooters in the UK, but it's recommended to cover theft and accidental damage.
The Eden Cabin Car includes heating as standard, and heated seats are available as an upgrade, so it stays comfortable on cold mornings.
