The Motability Scheme helps people with disabilities maintain their independence. It lets you lease a car, wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV), mobility scooter, or powered wheelchair using your qualifying mobility allowance.
The Motability Scheme lets eligible people exchange the mobility component of their disability benefit for a leased vehicle or piece of mobility equipment. Depending on what you choose, your lease can include insurance, servicing and routine maintenance, breakdown cover, road tax, and tyre or windscreen replacement.

Motability eligibility depends on receiving one of the following qualifying mobility allowances, with at least 12 months remaining on your award:
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

Unfortunately, Standard Rate Mobility PIP doesn't qualify for the Motability Scheme. You also can't join if you only receive Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or a lower rate mobility allowance.
If your mobility needs have changed recently, it's worth speaking to your benefit provider. They can tell you whether you're now entitled to a qualifying mobility allowance.

No. One of the biggest misconceptions about Motability is that you need to hold a driving licence to join.
In reality, the vehicle or equipment is provided for the benefit of the disabled person, though someone else can operate or drive it on their behalf. A spouse, partner, or family member can drive you, a carer can be named as a driver, and parents can lease a vehicle or scooter for an eligible child. Depending on the vehicle and insurance, you can usually nominate up to three drivers.
Yes. Many people assume the scheme only covers cars, but you can also lease a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair through Motability, alongside wheelchair accessible vehicles.
This makes the scheme particularly useful if you don't drive but still want to maintain your independence when getting out and about.
Most Motability leases are designed to be hassle-free. They typically include comprehensive insurance, servicing, routine maintenance, breakdown cover and road tax.
Some vehicles and equipment require an Advance Payment, whilst others are available with no Advance Payment at all, depending on the model you choose.

You need at least 12 months remaining on your qualifying mobility allowance when you apply.
Yes. As long as you're already receiving a qualifying mobility allowance and have at least 12 months remaining, your age doesn't prevent you from joining the scheme.
Yes. It can be used by nominated drivers or carers, provided it's being used for the benefit of the disabled person.
