What Is PIP?

Getting your mobility scooter financed may sound like a dream come true, but first let’s get into what PIP is - which stands for Personal Independence Payment. Basically PIP is a benefit from the UK government that aims to help people with long term health conditions or disabilities manage the extra costs that can come with daily life. If you have difficulty doing normal everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition or disability, you can get PIP even if you work or you’re getting other benefits.

You could get daily living PIP if you need assistance with day to day tasks such as eating/drinking, using the toilet or washing just to name a few. You can find out about daily living PIP on the Gov website here. In this blog we’re focussing more on mobility PIP, which you will get if you need help getting around. You can get one or both but how much the PIP will cover will depend on how hard you find your daily tasks or getting about.

Mobility PIP

You will get mobility PIP if your health condition or disability makes it difficult for you to get around. If this sound like you and you’re hoping to get a mobility scooter on PIP, you will qualify as long as you find it hard to do the following:

  • Working out a route and following it

  • Physically moving around

  • Leaving your home

How this is determined is the Department For Work And Pensions (DWP) will assess how hard you perform mobility tasks. They’ll take into account whether you can do it safely, how long it takes you, how your condition affects the task and if you need help doing it whether that’s from a person or equipment.

How Do You Get A Mobility Scooter On PIP

If you find normal tasks like popping to the shops difficult and you’re wondering: “how do I get a mobility scooter on PIP?” Firstly you’ll need to apply for PIP. You can either do this by phone where you will need to call the PIP new claims line on 0800 917 2222, from there you will be sent a form you’ll need to fill out and send back about your condition. Alternatively you can start your claim via post however this will take longer. You will send a letter to this address: Freepost DWP PIP 1 and you will be sent a form back about your personal information, then after sending that back you will be sent a form about your condition/disability. This method takes much longer so you might want to opt for a different option. In some areas of the UK you can apply for PIP online; you can check if you can here.

Once your Mobility PIP has been accepted you can use it to lease a mobility scooter through the Motability Scheme as long as you have 12 months remaining and you’re getting the enhanced rate of the mobility component of PIP.
